Hello Families,

Next week is the last week of school before the winter break. School finishes on Thursday December 19th and students return on Thursday January 9th. Next Thursday is a full day of school.

We will be having a Winter Celebration through song next Wednesday, 18th  at 8:30 am and again on Thursday 19th at 1pm . You are invited to attend either of them.

The students have continued learning multiplication in math and how it connects to division. After the holiday we will begin learning about fractions. In art we have been engaging in seasonal designs. We have been engaged in yoga this week in gym, developing good posture while exercising as well as having fun.

In science the grade 4 /5 students have been focused on building and testing windmills and made connections with real life applications. The grade 3 students concluded their inquiry into buildings and materials by constructing a giant class bridge. There was amazing collaboration and team effort which produced a super structure.

In social studies, we concluded our study of Peru with the grade 3 students summarizing what they had learned and comparing it to Canada. In grade 4 and 5 they continue to learn about Alberta and Canada.

In literacy the grade 3's concluded their writing on Rapunzel by building towers and designing how to help her escape. In grade 4 and 5 the students continued writing their own creation stories after reading traditional tales.

We continue to appreciate you supporting your children to read every day. Please also remind your children to dress appropriately for our changeable weather.

Thank you and have a lovey weekend.

Hello Families,

As many of you know, each of our grades host an event (such as Remembrance Day) or a “celebration of learning” assembly at some time throughout the year. December will be a sharing event around some of the work being done in our music classes. While this is NOTa formal concert, parents are welcome to join us to hear what the students have been working on.

To make sure that we are able to include all of our Kindergarten students, we are having two assemblies, the music will be the same at both.

Wednesday Dec 18 - 8:30-9:20
Thursday Dec 19 - 1:00-1:50

If you will be joining us, please let your child’s teacher know so that we can have enough chairs available.

Thank you,
Mr. Bennett

Hello Families,

It's been a busy first week of December! We welcomed student doctors from the University of Calgary, who presented an interactive session on healthy eating to the whole school. We hope this will encourage the children to be more open to bringing healthy snacks and lunches to school.
In Gym we have moved to dance and yoga, which all the students seem to enjoy.  We have just concluded our work on telling time for now and are re-visiting multiplication and division for the next couple of weeks with some festive math. Our grade 3 students have been reading and writing about Rapunzel; this culminated in a STEM activity where they had to design and build a method to help Rapunzel escape from the tower. Some amazing design and construction took place! The Grade 4 students have been  listening to and writing their own creation  stories. In science the grade 3's have design have designed their own bridges and next week we will collaborate to construct a large bridge in the classroom. The Grade 4s are building windmills using lego, identifying the simple machines in them, and then using wind power to create electricity. The grade 3s continue to learn about Peru  in Social Studies and the importance of llamas and alpacas to the culture and economy. This week they created their own looms and have been weaving some pretty spectacular designs. The grade 4s continue to learn about Alberta asking questions about our province, and are moving towards building a large 3D map. In art we created some holiday tree art and the grade 4 students also got to do some weaving.
With just two weeks to go to the start of our winter break on Thursday December 19th, there will be lots going on in the school. We will be having a couple of winter celebrations through song, which you are welcome to join. Further details to follow.
Next week we will have some fun with the Hand Washing Glo Kit, which is an amazing way to show the children GERMS. As the weather continues to be so changeable and an increasing number of children getting sick, please ensure they wear weather appropriate clothes. Thank you.
Stay warm and have a lovely weekend.

Hello Families
We are all very excited about our visit to TELUS Spark tomorrow. Please make sure you pack a brown bag lunch and any utensils that your child may need, as well as a bottle of water or drink. We will be leaving school around 9am, but please make sure your child is at school on time in case the bus turns up early. Thank you to our parent volunteers who are supporting us. Please be at the school by 8:45am.

Our Remembrance Day Assembly is on Friday at 10:30 in the gymnasium at the school.  We are delighted to  invite you to come and watch as your children participate in this assembly.  We would like the students to wear a black or dark t-shirt or top. Please don't buy a new one but we would appreciate it if it is not dark, it is fairly plain. We will provide a poppy for them to wear.

As the weather turns colder, it is also important that students are dressed appropriately for the weather.  They will need 2 pair of footwear (one inside and one outside), a warm, winter coat, snowpants, toque, scarf and mittens.  Socks are also important as they help to keep our feet warm and dry.  It is okay to send extra socks to school in case feet get wet.

Grey Cup Festival Visit  November 21st - The Grade 3s and 4s will be going on another Field Trip to Stampede Festival Grounds as part of the Grey Cup celebration. The trip is being organized and paid for by the Stampeders Foundation, so no cost to us.  Further details will follow next week, but as always, we will need parent volunteers to support us.

On a personal note, I won't be here next week as I have had a death in my family and will be attending the funeral in the UK. If you have any concerns during that time, please connect with the substitute teacher Ms Lee, or Mr Bennett and Mr Nyrerod. I am sorry to disrupt the children, but Ms Lee has been in the school before and most students know her.

Please remember that there is no school on Monday November 11th

I look forward to seeing some of you on Friday for our Remembrance Assembly.

Thank you

Happy Halloween Families,

Tomorrow is October 31, and in case your children haven't mentioned it, it is Halloween!!  To make it a pleasant day for everyone we have decided the following:
  1. Costumes may be worn all day but we do ask that they not contain anything scary, no blood, no masks and no weapons.  As Kindergarten may be seeing all the costumes throughout the day we do not want them to get scared.
  2. Costumes are not mandatory.  If you choose to wear one great, if not then no worries.
  3. Tomorrow is a regular day of classes.
Friday, November 1:
There is no school on Friday for the students.  The teachers are in school for Professional Development, but the students get a long weekend.  We look forward to welcoming your children back on Monday November 4th.

TELUS Spark Field Trip - Thursday November 7th:
If you haven't already done so, please return your child's permission slip fully completed and the $6 cost as soon as possible. If you have a police check and are able to volunteer, please let us know as we are still looking for help.

Remembrance Day Assembly - November 8th
Your children will be participating in the Remembrance Assembly on November 8th and we would be delighted if you are able to join us, as we honour those who gave their lives. Further details will follow next week.

Thank you and, as always,  please connect with us if you have any questions or concerns.

Hello Families,

This week we finished off our study of light and shadow in science with hands on activities to enhance our understanding. Talking of science, on November 7th we are taking our first Field Trip to TELUS Spark; we will be looking for volunteers, so if you have a current police check in place, please save the date! In math we started our work on division using manipulatives. We created some super inclusive art after reading Todd Parr's book, Love the World and had a wonderful conversation about what inclusion means and what it should look like in our school. As we approached the holiday weekend, the children designed their own holiday. I was blown away by the conversations we had, which resulted in some excellent writing capturing their ideas about a global holiday for children. They wanted to make sure all children around the world had access to food, an education, clothes and a safe place to live. You should be so proud!
The children are definitely ready for a well-deserved break, and we look forward to seeing them all again on Monday October 21st.
Thank you, Libby Coldbeck
